Why is there weed in my skin and hair care?

Have you noticed the influx of hempseed oil in beauty products? Hemp aka cannabis aka THC aka weed…are you following me now??? Does this mean that you can catch a contact from a body lotion or face cream- sorry to disappoint but no, hempseed oil contains little to no of the mind altering matter found in the leaves that many rely on everyday for “medicinal” purposes. What they do have however is a high dosage of essential fatty acids to help reinforce the lipid layer of the stratum corneum or for those of you that may have indulged in the leaf before reading this post…adds some of the oils back into your skin to make the oily barrier stronger (sorry, I couldn’t resist:-) This is important because free radicals and outside factors beat up our barrier all day long; since many of us don’t eat the right foods that can help our skin renew itself, ingredients like hempseed oil that contain essential fatty acids (omega 3, omega 6, linoleic) can replenish and strengthen the lipid barrier- doing this will keep your skin moisturized, soft and supple.

Fresh has a line of cannabis products such as a body cream, shampoo and a… scented candle. Now I haven’t lit one up yet but this may be just the candle that I need to set the mood or when I need to spark some creative energy—just kidding people—this candle has notes of wild strawberries, kumquat, dark plum, patchouli, magnolia, rose, chocolate, vetiver, and vanilla musk!

Alterna also has a line of hemp products for hair. Why would hair benefit from hempseed oil? Hempseed oil acts more like sebum, the natural oil that our bodies produce to protect our hair and skin. The curlier your hair is the more difficult is becomes for your sebum to travel from the root of your hair up to the tips- that’s why many of us curly girls have dry hair. Products with hempseed oil add a layer of protection and if formulated correctly- it will coat your hair without weighing it down too much- a girl has got to maintain her bounce!
