Skin UnFriendly Cities
Hey B spot!
Fyi, I am sooo tired that it’s a bit difficult keeping my eyes open right now, I apologize in advance for typos! Anyway, totalbeauty.com did a great story called “The 13 Worst Skin Cities”; the results were very surprising to me! New York City was no where on the list (can I tell you that, for me, Manhattan in the summer requires a complete skin overhaul but maybe that’s just me)!
They determined the worst skin cities by looking at pollution levels, sunshine and humidity averages, skin cancer and smoking rates and tanning salons per capita. Here are the cities that made it to “the list”.
13. Portland, Maine- Very high skin cancer and smoking rates, way too many tanning salons
12. Tacoma, Washington- First and foremost, it’s the most stressed out city in the country (really? Tacoma?), 21 tanning salons per capita and high skin cancer rate
11. Macon, Georgia- high average humidity (88%) results in clogged pores and increased breakouts (so much for stress free country living)
10. Tampa, Florida- Tropical level sunshine but high tendency to bake in UV ovens while smoking at rate of 23% (hmm, maybe the gator love is so strong there is an unconscious desire to look like one…sorry, I’m just trying to figure out underlying issue here people)
9. Kansas City, Missouri- One of the highest skin cancer rates in the country and about a quarter of the population smokes, couple that with heavy pollution and 81 percent average humidity and you have a skin disaster on your hands!
8. Detroit, Michigan- Sixth most polluted city, high average humidity and too many smokers (Detroit is well overdue for an overhaul- let’s take the issue straight to Washington)
7. Cleveland, Ohio- Another city on the top ten most polluted cities in the country, number 3 in the country for tanning salons, a quarter of the people smoke, and the humidity can get ridiculous– It’s time to make a change for the good, no seriously, start taking care of your health and your skin will thank you for it!
6. Charleston, West Virginia- 34 tanning salons per capita? Charleston, I’m going to let you in on a little secret- self tanners and bronzers! You can get a healthy glow without damaging your skin, now how is that for compromise!
5. Phoenix, Arizona- Pollution, sunshine and heat (dry instead of humid) which can make your skin look dehydrated and wrinkled (its no wonder Bella moved to Forks–oops did I just let my inner geek show?)
4. Las Vegas, Nevada- What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas except when totalbeauty.com puts it on blast for the stress and smoke filled lifestyle of its residents! Relax, relate, release- wear sunscreen with antioxidants, drink plenty of water, and take up yoga.
3. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania- Second most polluted city in the country, second in tanning salons per capita in the country, and a high smoking rate- Pittsburgh doesn’t make it easy to have healthy skin!
2. Houston, Texas- Everything is bigger in Texas that includes a bigger hole in the ozone topped off with high smoking rate and humidity percentage (90 percent).
1. Bakersfield, California- Hailed by the American Lung Association as the city most polluted by year round by particles in the USA, Bakersfield has the unfortunate position of being the number one culprit for skin battering. Take the particle pollutants, dry heat and no breeze to blow the particles away and you have ideal conditions for less than ideal skin.
If you live in these cities, there is no need to pack up and move- There are many products available to help you overcome your skin conditions caused by the environment.
