A “Berry” Good Shave Indeed…and cheap too!
I’m going to be the first one to raise my hand and admit that when it comes to shaving…I don’t go out of my way to buy shaving gels or creams. I know, it’s shocking right? I tend to use my husbands shaving gel because it lathers well and creates a barrier between my skin and the blade (which is very comforting) but I still get a close shave. But, there is a product that has me rethinking my strategy just a bit because I get the same “barrier” feeling, close shave and it’s under $2 (how’s that for a budget diva, hmmm). Pure Silk Moisturizing Shave Cream comes out of the can in s luxurious cream so you pretty much just spread a thick layer- it’s already creamy so no need to rub until raw to get a decent coating of lather unlike some gels (I’m not saying any names)! Don’t get me wrong, I do like gels too- I love my husband’s product- but that isn’t $1.79! The creators of Pure Silk have been in the shaving game since forever so I think it’s safe to say that they know what they’re doing.
Science Behind It:
The thick foam is created by the soap system (when stearic acid is mixed with triethanolamine to a pH above 6.5, it forms a soap) and the surfactant (sodium lauryl sulfate) being forced out of the can by the propellant. Soap is a liquid crystal system- lamellar liquid crystals (remember that? The platelike structures stacked up on top of each other?)- these crystals sort of “slide” across one another so it allows the blade to move across you skin and offers more protection than a plain surfactant system.
