Talking Skin with Ciara
OK B. Spotters, Ciara is just as sweet as can be! She is an intelligent young woman who definitely has her game together! She’s been keeping busy while waiting for the right time to launch her new CD and her movie debut “Momma I Want to Sing”. Even if Ciara’s style of music isn’t your cup of tea, you have to admit that she is beautiful and has great skin!
Ciara’s philosophy on skin is to take care of your skin while you’re young so you won’t have to work as hard on it when you’re older (FYI, that’s actually a true statement, if you protect your skin during your younger years when damage is beginning to accumulate then you will look less wrinkled with a more even skin tone when you’re older). Ciara likes Skinceutical products to protect and preserve her youthfulness. Here are a couple of her faves:
- Skinceuticals Gentle Cleanser
- Skinceuticals Actives UV Defense SPF 15
It’s great to see that Ciara realizes the importance of wearing a sunscreen everyday!
Science Behind it:
Skinceuticals Actives UV Defense contains a blend of Mexoryl and Avobenzone sunscreen actives to absorb UVA rays that cause photoaging (aging caused by excessive exposure to UV rays) as well as certain skin cancers. There was some confusion when Mexoryl first arrived in the USA market because people believed that the FDA had finally approved another sunscreen active. This is not the case! Mexoryl can only be used by L’Oreal in sunscreens because they treated the complete formulation- cream/lotion- as a drug (they filed a New Drug Application) and had it- the cream/lotion- approved as such. **Sidebar** Regular sunscreens in the USA contain one or a combination of the sixteen approved sunscreen actives. If there is another sunscreen active in the product not approved in the USA, the FDA will have it pulled off of the shelves!
Anyhoo, because Actives UV Defense also contains Octocrylene (a sunscreen active approved in the USA for UVB protection) in addition to Avobenzone and Mexoryl. It is considered a broad spectrum sunscreen. Broad spectrum sunscreens offer the best protection because they protect from both UVA and UVB rays so you are reducing your risk of skin cancer and photoaging. Do not assume that all sunscreens are broad spectrum; check the label and see what claims are being made!
